BirdEyes Newsroom

Thanks to a grant from the Gieskes-Strijbis Fund, BirdEyes is operating a newsroom for a period of 18 months. Through articles, workshops, concerts, and exhibitions, the researchers engage with anyone who wishes to (re)discover a sense of wonder about our shared living environment. Two specific target groups receive special attention: young people following vocational education pathways and ambitious, ethically driven students exploring their future careers. A constant element across all activities is the creation of meaningful experiences, inspired by a key finding from the migratory bird research. To achieve this, BirdEyes works closely with artists.

We’ve involved new audiences by designing and producing these projects and activities:

1. Weekly newsitems on our website about research on migratory birds along the flyways.
2. Observations by scientist Wouter Vansteelant, shared on LinkedIn.
3. A data-driven article about the migration of three individual birds – in collaboration with de Volkskrant.
4. A concept for an escape room about the sanderling (currently in development) – in collaboration with  Campus Fryslân.
5. An augmented reality (AR) app with a virtual spoonbill, godwit and red knot (currently in development) – in collaboration with EVRGreen Studio and Aeres MBO Leeuwarden.
6. New compositions inspired by migratory bird research – in collaboration with the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
7. Music based on the sound diary of a spoonbill – in collaboration with Solanum.
8. A Happy Earth Day message in collaboration with filmmaker Hilco Jansma.
9. The bar-tailed godwit featured in a new exhibition on animal migration – in collaboration with NEMO Science Museum.
10. A short documentary as part of a new series called Global Flyways (currently in development) – in collaboration with BirdLife International and Content With Purpose.
11. Wadden Portraits exhibition – in collaboration with artist Jasper Zijlstra.
12. Illustrations of the diet of godwits – in collaboration with artist Marijke Klamer.
13. AI-powered red knot dialogues (currently in development) – in collaboration with Nature Perspectives.
