Dear BirdEyes community,

Last year was such an eventful period for BirdEyes! Just like a juvenile migratory bird fledged the year before, our world expanded rapidly, full of exciting experiences, discoveries, and achievements, but also many challenges and set backs. We preformed our first migratory movements by the end of July, just like a spoonbill: we moved from our original office space in the old Friesland Bank, and went on to establish beautiful partnerships with our friends from Fryske Academy, Campus Fryslân, and Tresoar. There we found very welcoming office spaces and inspiring and intellectually stimulating environments, opening new avenues and perspectives, but more importantly bringing us closer to our very strong Frisian roots, from where we have been exploring the full breath and width of the flyways of the world.

With a new year already started and buzzing, we would like to still take time to review the year that went by, and project what lies ahead of us. We therefore would like to invite you to join us in the BirdEyes’ New Year gathering, where we will be celebrating together the communal love for science and the arts, expressed through our work with migratory birds and their (our) environment.

Come join us in Tresoar, Boterhoek 1, Leeuwarden, literary café ‘De Gouden Leeuw’ on the 29th January, from 16:00 hours for a social afternoon of drinks and snacks among friends, colleagues, and partners from all realms of society.

Agenda

In addition, we are currently organizing targeted work meetings, building on the traditions that we have developed during the Wadvogelwerk (Metawad-Waddenfonds), Kening fan ‘e Greide for many years, and the black-tailed godwit research in southwest Fryslân.

Centre for global ecological change at the University of Groningen

Birdeyes is a science and creative centre that views the world - almost literally - through the eyes of birds. More and more birds are flying around with tiny transmitters, loggers and other high technology on their backs and legs. This generates an unimaginable amount of information. By cleverly combining such data with other sources of information, and by using new ways to tell stories and share the insights with, BirdEyes strives to open up a new knowledge network. The centre at the Faculties of Science & Engineering and Campus Fryslân aims to be an innovative part of the University of Groningen and is linked to the Rudolph Agricola School for Sustainable Development. BirdEyes, with empirical and inspirational roots in the farthest corners of the world.
